There is a particular kind of compound that never makes it into a catalogue. Not because nobody wants it, but because making it is awkward. The route is long, the intermediates are unstable, or the demand is so small that no supplier can justify keeping stock. Research teams meet these rare and difficult compounds all the time, and the only way to get one is to have it made.
How custom synthesis works
That is what custom synthesis is for. The work usually starts with a structure and a question: can this be made, how, and how soon? A synthetic chemist looks at the target, proposes a route, checks which starting materials and building blocks are available, and flags the steps likely to cause trouble. Only after that does anyone quote a timeline. A good supplier will be upfront when a route looks risky, since an honest "this may take longer" is worth more than a hopeful date that slips.
Small-scale batches: from a gram to around 10 grams
Scale matters more than people expect. For a lot of early research, the need isn't kilograms. It is a few grams, sometimes less, of a compound a team wants to test or use as a reference. Small-scale custom synthesis, from a single gram up to around 10 grams, is a specialised skill in its own right, because the compound is complex and the batch is small, so there is little room for waste. Teams in discovery chemistry, medicinal chemistry and analytical development tend to need exactly this.
How to brief a custom synthesis project
A custom synthesis enquiry moves faster with the right details. Send the structure or CAS number, the quantity, the purity you need and the analytical data you expect, which usually means NMR, HPLC and mass spectrometry. Say whether stereochemistry matters, and whether there is a known literature route you would like followed. If the compound may be needed at larger scale later, mention that now so the route chosen can grow with the project.
From gram scale to development and production
Where a project is heading toward development or production, contract support can follow it. ChemSpectrum offers CRO, CMO and CDMO services, so a molecule first made at gram scale can be developed and manufactured further without changing partners halfway.
